have at it. our HE compatible laundry detergent was formulated to be used effectively in both standard and high efficiency (HE) machines. you can use the same dosing for both types. learn more about method's laundry detergent.
are method products safe on natural stone?
most of our surface cleaners are safe for use on natural stone, as long as the stone has been properly sealed. our all purpose cleaners, tub and tile cleaner, and daily shower cleaner are all safe to use. however, we don't recommend using the antibac cleaners on natural stone due to its acidity.

as a general precaution, we always recommend testing in a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure the product is compatible with the surface.
does method test on animals?
method is 100% cruelty-free—that’s why all of our products are Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International-certified. that means we’re regularly audited to ensure both method and our suppliers comply with the comprehensive criteria of the Standard of Compassion for Animals.

we’ve never tested ingredients or finished products on animals, nor have we ever ordered third parties to conduct animal testing on our behalf. for research and development, we use alternative testing methods—like theoretical evaluation models—to determine product safety without harming creatures, big or small. PETA even named our cofounders people of the year in 2006 for their leadership in cruelty-free business practices + gave method a proggy award that same year.

why am I getting an error message when I enter my credit card information?

  • your card may have expired or reached its limit. please check with your credit card provider if you are having issues using your card.
  • there may be a transaction error either on our end or your bank’s. in this case, please try entering in your information again at a later time.

if you continue to have problems, you can contact someone to help by calling our ordering partners at Soap.com at 1-800-762-7123

where is the confirmation email for my online order?
there are a couple of reasons you may not have gotten a confirmation email: 1. your confirmation email may have been captured in your spam filter. check your spam folder to see if it could be there. 2. your order might not have been completed. if you were not brought to a confirmation page upon completing your order, it’s likely that something happened that prevented your order from being completed. you’ll need to re-enter your order in this case. if you have reached a confirmation page and still did not receive a confirmation email, you can check the status of your order here. if you would like to contact someone about the status of your order, please contact our online partner Soap.com at 1-800-762-7123.

how much does it cost to ship my order?
let’s face it, cleaning products are heavy. and shipping can be expensive. to help keep your shipping costs in line, we suggest placing more than one item in your cart, as many of our online retailers offer free shipping with a minimum order. for current shipping rates, visit Soap.com.
why is method more expensive to purchase online than at Target?
methodhome.com sells its products online for the same price that can be found at many specialty and grocery stores. a large volume retailer such as Target can generally offer a lower price than most other retailers both online and offline.

the definition of a specific term (biodegradable, surfactant, naturally derived)

what does method mean when it says “natural”?
method products contain natural ingredients. when you see “naturally derived” on a method label, it means that 100% of its functional cleaning ingredients – things like soaps, detergents, solvents and enzymes – are either found in nature or derived from natural sources.
what is a “surfactant”?
surfactants are a category of compounds that are quite simply plain old soap. these are compounds that can dissolve organic materials (like grease, oils, dirt, etc) into water, and allow them to be taken away from dishes, surfaces, laundry, etc. they are the workhorse compounds that make cleaning products work. yay surfactants!
what does “HE” mean?
“HE” means high efficiency. it denotes a type of laundry machine that uses less water than standard washers. HE machines are typically side-loading (as opposed to top-loading), and have sealed doors.

method HE-compatible laundry detergents can be used in either standard or HE machines.

visit method’s line of HE laundry detergents

what is EGBE?
good question! ethylene glycol butyl ether, or EGBE, is an ingredient found in many commonly purchased household cleaners. it has no color and acts as a degreaser. there are some studies that show links between exposure to this chemical and fertility problems.

while some companies believe that your potential for hazard is only experienced by the length of time you are exposed to EGBE, method believes in not exposing you to the chemical at all. all of our products are EBGE-free.

what does method mean when it says “biodegradable”?
a material that can biodegrade is one that will break down in the environment. in the presence of water, air, and microbes, materials that biodegrade are converted into elements typically found in nature. we select of cleaning ingredients to meet the internationally recognized OECD biodegradation testing standards.
what does method mean when it says “non-toxic”?
“non-toxic” can describe an ingredient or an entire formula. it is used for a formula when all of the ingredients meet a certain level of non-toxicity, or when the modeled sum of all of the ingredient toxicities is less toxic than a widely accepted threshold for safety. to assess the toxicity of our formulations, we use data from suppliers, as well as simulated skin and eye tests. we never test on animals.
what is the difference between sanitizing and disinfecting?
disinfecting offers a higher level of killing than sanitizing. the EPA has developed test methods for sanitizing and disinfecting. both are relevant and important measurements of a product’s efficacy when used in the home. these test methods are very different in how they measure the effectiveness of a product to kill microorganisms.

safety + allergies

how do method antibacterial products disinfect/sanitize?
our antibacterial cleaners use citric acid to break down the structure of germs.

follow the label instructions to use.

for kitchen and bathroom sprays:

to disinfect: wet the surface. leave for 10 minutes. allow to air dry.

to sanitize: wet the surface. leave for 30 seconds. allow to air dry.

for wipes:

wet the surface. leave wet for 10 minutes. allow to air dry.

is method safe to use around pets?
method is safe to use around pets and on surfaces with which your animal may come in contact. method is not dangerous if it comes in contact with pets’ skin or fur but you should wipe excess amounts off the skin or fur with water. if swallowed by a pet, offer your animal a healthy serving of milk or water to dilute and call your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center immediately. you can reach Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.
are method’s products safe for septic tanks?
yes, all method products are safe for septic tanks, as all of the ingredients are readily biodegradable. method contains no phosphates, hydrocarbons or other septic-problem chemicals.
is the method bathroom tub + tile cleaner safe on acrylic or fiberglass?
yes, method’s bathroom tub + tile cleaner is in fact safe to use on acrylic and/or fiberglass as directed on the labels.

as with all of our cleaners, the tub + tile spray is naturally derived, non-toxic and non-corrosive, meaning it will not damage, dry out or corrode common household surfaces. as a general precaution, we always recommend testing a small, inconspicuous area first when dealing with unsealed stone, painted or unfinished wood or any other surface you are particularly concerned about.

is the method daily shower cleaner safe on granite or marble?
yes, method’s daily shower cleaner is safe to use on granite and/or marble, provided that the stone is sealed.

as with all of our cleaners, the shower spray is naturally derived, non-toxic and non-corrosive, meaning it will not damage, dry out or corrode common household surfaces. as a general precaution, we always recommend testing a small, inconspicuous area first when dealing with unsealed stone, painted or unfinished wood or any other surface you are particularly concerned about.

is the method bathroom tub + tile cleaner safe on stone surfaces?
method bathroom tub + tile cleaner is safe on granite, limestone, marble, and any other stone, provided that the stone is sealed. it is also safe on acrylic, glass and fiberglass. as always, each surface is different, so please test method in an inconspicuous area first.
is method safe for people with allergies?
method is generally a good option for people with allergies and chemical sensitivities, although everyone’s chemistry varies.

if you have chemical sensitivities, we recommend testing a very small amount of method first before using the product throughout your home. you may also be interested in trying method’s fragrance-free hand wash, laundry detergent and dishwashing tablets*.

yes. surfaces cleaned with method, including high chairs and/or bathtubs, are absolutely safe for contact by children. method does not leave behind any toxic or harmful fumes or residues, as it does not contain hazardous ingredients.

like all cleaning formulas, method should not be ingested. prolonged exposure to the skin may cause minor irritation and should simply be washed off with water. if method gets in the eyes, it may cause slight irritation, which should be treated by flushing the eyes thoroughly with water. if one of our products is swallowed, simply dilute with a glass of milk or water and consult your doctor. if one of our ultra concentrated products, such as method laundry detergent, fabric softener or dilutable cleaner, is swallowed, dilute with a glass of milk or water and call your doctor or a poison control center immediately.

for further questions, please contact the American Association of Poison Control Centers at (800) 222-1222.

what is the possibility of your antibac line creating “superbugs” or antimicrobial resistance?
the active ingredient in Antibac, citric acid, is widespread in nature and used in folk-medicine and cooking for thousands of years and there is no evidence that bacteria have become resistant. we are not aware of any information that suggests that citric acid is associated with the rise of antimicrobial resistance. most experts believe that the emergence of antibiotic resistant superbugs is the result of the overuse of the antibiotics through over prescribing and as animal feed additives.
do method antibacterial cleaning products work against H1N1 flu (Swine Flu)?
the EPA recognizes that products currently registered to kill Influenza A virus are effective against the 2009 H1N1 flu strain. method antibacterial cleaning products kill 99.9% of the Influenza A virus. additional information is available on the EPA website.
is method safe to ingest?
like all cleaning formulas, method should not be ingested. if one of our products is swallowed, drink a glass of milk or water and consult your doctor. if one of our ultra concentrated products, such as method laundry detergent, fabric softener or dilutable cleaner, is swallowed, dilute with a glass of milk or water and call your doctor or a poison control center immediately.

you can contact American Association of Poison Control Centers at (800) 222-1222.

product usage + packaging

I cannot get my hand wash pump to work. Help.
our hand wash pumps are a bit different than others on the market in that they do not lift up and release. for best results, first ensure that the dispenser is screwed on tightly to the bottle (otherwise the nozzle will simply spin), turn the nozzle clockwise and then press down to dispense.
have you guys ever thought about refills?
as far as refills go, we currently offer refill sizes of our most quickly used products - the laundry detergent, dish soap, daily shower cleaner, gel and foaming hand wash. we hope to add to our assortment as our retailers give us more shelf space.
can I use method HE-compatible laundry detergent for my standard washer?
have at it. our HE compatible laundry detergent was formulated to be used effectively in both standard and high efficiency (HE) machines. you can use the same dosing for both types. learn more about method's laundry detergent.
can method laundry detergent be used with fabric softener and dryer sheets? What about stain sticks or sprays?
our new method® Laundry Detergent with Smart Clean® Technology will work effectively, if followed by traditional in-wash softener in a rinse cycle (don’t add softener to your wash step, please). it will also work fine with dryer sheets or our dryer-activated softener spray.
Is your laundry detergent bottle recyclable?
yes, the bottle is recyclable (#2, HDPE) and while the pump and the shrink sleeve label are made from recyclable materials, these materials are not currently accepted in most US recycling systems.
how is it that such a little bit of your laundry detergent works?
we redesigned laundry detergent so it works in a whole new way. getting your clothes clean requires cleaning agents (aka surfactants). surfactants bond to dirt and stains in the wash, lifting them up to be carried away by water.

traditional detergent’s cleaning agents are on the inside and water is on the outside.

  • for these cleaning agents to work, they have to break open to release the surfactants
  • this requires agitation and time… and is a little hit-or-miss… not all surfactants break through which means you use (and waste) more detergent than you really need

our SmartClean Technology™ formula is designed to be inside-out with cleaning agents outside, water inside.

  • this allows cleaning agents to get to work right away – once released into the wash, they’re like magnets immediately drawn to dirt and stains, so there’s less agitation and time required for contact
  • and unlike traditional detergent, more of our cleaning agents are used, that’s why you can use so much less and still get a great clean!
can you relock down the squirter on your laundry detergent?
yes! press the pump all the way down. while down, turn the nozzle to the right (clockwise) until the nozzle stops (~ 1.5 times). the pump should stay locked down. note: you will end up dispensing some product in the process.
how do you open and start the pump on your laundry detergent?
grasp the bottle. turn the squirt nozzle on the pump top counter-clockwise (looking from the top) one turn. it should pop up to be ready for use. it will take 2 or 3 pump strokes to prime (that’s engineering speak for when the product's flowing and ready to use).
how do I get all of the product out? I’m having trouble getting my dispenser to empty all the way.
align the pump's opening with the pickup tube at the bottom of the package (look for the pink dot) so it will reach the bottom of the liquid when you get to the end of the product (tilt bottle, as needed).
are the refill pouches recyclable?
great question! we put a lot of thought into this packaging, so we’re glad to see it getting some attention.

first off: this pouch design is not recyclable in US recycling systems, although it is in some other countries in the world. it may seem counter-intuitive that a non-recyclable package is more eco-friendly, which is the reason we thought about this option for so long.

an ecological impact calculation was performed on several packaging options by a Swiss company (Migros) that makes food products. it concluded that the pouch had one seventh the ecological impact than an equivalent-volume PET bottle even if this bottle was assumed to be recycled 80% of the time. given that US recycling rates are far lower than this, the degree of favorability is even higher. the reason for this is that the packaging weight of the pouch is drastically lower than for the PET bottle, with the result that all of the material, water, air and energy inputs in the production, manufacturing process, transportation, usage and retail are scaled down significantly for the pouch.

the pouch is the resoundingly preferable packaging option; however, it is clearly not perfect. the ideal solution would be a version of the pouch that is recyclable. method is currently pursuing this option and hopes to eventually replace the current pouch.

can I buy method in bulk or industrial sizes?
currently, we do not have bulk/industrial sizes nor an efficient business-to-business system for wholesale. you can pull our products from a number of wholesale retailers. if you prefer to order in smaller amounts, check out Amazon.com. there you can order some our products – like our all purpose cleaner and hand wash – by the case. we’re also carried by UNFI, so if you’re a member, please check out their catalog for our items. you can also buy individual product on Soap.com or methodhome.com. in the meantime, thank you so much for your interest in method. we’re actively working to provide better wholesale options for our consumers in the future.
Is the squirt + mop floor care safe for laminate flooring?
yes. you can use both the method all floor and wood floor care products safely on laminate without worry of damage. visit method floor care
will the method Antibac line replace method’s non-disinfecting cleaners?
no, method’s new antibac line will not replace our non-disinfecting cleaners. antibac is a line of specialty cleaners, and we recommend using these products for cleaning high-contact surfaces, such as on toilets and sinks. we recognize that some people prefer not to use antibacterial cleaners in the home, and we will continue to offer a variety of product formulas, fragrances and packaging to suit a wide variety of cleaning needs.

method antibac kills germs on surfaces including:

  • high contact areas (door knobs, sink, faucets, toilets, garbage cans, etc.)
  • kitchens, counters and appliances
  • high chairs, changing tables as well as in day care facilities
are antibac cleaners better than non-antibac?
we don’t believe that one type of cleaner is better than the other. the benefit of using our antibac cleaners on high-contact surfaces is that they kill germs you can’t see – household germs, including those that cause the common cold (rhinovirus and Influenza A).
do method antibacterial cleaners kill bacteria on contact, or does the product have to sit on the surface for a while? Is this the same as for the traditional disinfectant?
there are specific contact times for sanitizing and disinfecting. follow the label instructions to use.

for sprays:

to disinfect: wet the surface. leave for 10 minutes. allow to air dry.

to sanitize: wet the surface. leave for 5 minutes. allow to air dry.

for wipes:

wet the surface. leave wet for 10 minutes. allow to air dry.

yes, this is similar to traditional disinfecting products. each product has specified use instructions and contact time to kill specific microorganisms.

can leaving method antibacterial cleaners sitting on counters (granite, stainless, etc.) do any damage i.e. discoloration? Does it strip any polish/finish?
as with any cleaning product, you should always test in an inconspicuous place first. these products are designed to be used on hard, non-porous surfaces. some surfaces, such as granite, wood and certain types of tile are porous in nature. if you do have these types of surfaces, be sure they are effectively sealed prior to use.
are method products safe on natural stone?
most of our surface cleaners are safe for use on natural stone, as long as the stone has been properly sealed. our all purpose cleaners, tub and tile cleaner, and daily shower cleaner are all safe to use. however, we don't recommend using the antibac cleaners on natural stone due to its acidity.

as a general precaution, we always recommend testing in a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure the product is compatible with the surface.
do I need to rinse the counters after using method?
no. method spray cleaners are non-toxic and safe for food prep surfaces — just be sure to follow the instructions for use on the back of the bottle. no rinsing required. see method all-purpose cleaners.
my laundry pump won't squirt a steady stream.
usually problems with our pumps are related to improper alignment of the tub and the pump spout. if this is the cause, there's an easy fix: flip the bottle over and see where the pink dot (dip tube) is located. then, twist the nozzle around so that it lines up on the same side of the bottle as the tube. if the nozzle and the tube aren't lined up, the tube will try to suck up air instead of detergent when tilted.
My laundry pump broke. How much liquid is in a pump?
Sorry to hear about your pump. Our pumps typically last through 3-4 refills.

Four pumps is equivalent to one tablespoon, which is enough for a medium load of laundry. For anything larger or more heavily stained, add an additional tablespoon.

If you'd like another pump, please message us a info@methodhome.com with the size of your laundry pump, the lot code (six-digit code stamped in black ink on the bottom of the bottle), and a note on how the pump was broken (during use, fell during transport, etc).

smarty dish is leaving a white film on my dishes. what should I do?
although smarty dish works with 95% of water in the US, the white film is a common problem in areas with hard water.

the fastest way to remove the film and batch treat the dishes will require that you keep an eye on the dishwasher while you do the following: load the dishwasher in the normal way, start it (regular load) and allow it to run through the pre-wash cycle and drain. when you hear it start to refill with water, stop it, open and dump in a cup or two of white vinegar. run. repeat if necessary. you can also wash the articles in a stainless steel sink or in a plastic laundry room sink (NO ENAMEL, NO PORCELAIN) by putting white vinegar on a sponge and wiping them with the sponge followed by a short rinse. use the vinegar undiluted, but do not allow it to sit for too long before rinsing.

another solution is to use vinegar as a rinse aid. it will provide just enough surfactancy to lower the surface tension of the rinse water, allowing it to run off in a ‘sheet’ rather than in rivulets and thereby reduce spotting and filming.
are method products safe for gray water use?
yes. all of our products are completely suitable for grey water use on vegetation.

method's policy on human trafficking
excuse the formal speak, but this is really important. our lawyers would like us to communicate the following:

California Transparency in Supply Chains Act

statement relating to California Transparency in Supply Chains Act
method products, pbc, Ecover US and their affiliates (collectively, “the Company”) support the goals of the California Transparency in Supply Chain Act, which requires companies to disclose the efforts they have made to ensure that their supply chains are free from slavery and human trafficking. To that end, the Company seeks to ensure that quality and safety standards are maintained throughout our supply chain and that workers are treated fairly and in accordance with all applicable laws. We have undertaken the following efforts to help prevent slavery and human trafficking in our supply chain:
  1. we periodically review our supply chain and supplier base to determine the level of risk associated with each supplier with respect to slavery and human trafficking based on our knowledge of their industries and their country of origin, and if we believe it is appropriate to do so, we will switch our source of supply to a supplier with a lower level of risk. Company employees and representatives conduct site visits of suppliers located outside of the United States on a periodic basis and confirm that based on their knowledge and information the supplier is not engaging in slavery or human trafficking. we have not yet begun conducting independent, unannounced audits of third party suppliers, nor have we used a third party to verify the risks in our supply chain.
  2. in order to meet the Act’s directive relating to supplier certification, each of our direct suppliers is asked to adhere to our Company Supplier Code of Conduct,
  3. if we have reason to believe that a supplier is not in compliance with the Company Supplier Code of Conduct as it relates to the California Transparency in Supply Chain Act, we will take appropriate steps, including the elimination of the supplier from the Company’s supplier base or, if the violation is less severe, the opportunity to remedy the non-compliance through the development and execution of a corrective action plan.
  4. we ensure that key employees from our Procurement/Supply Chain organization are trained to identify and respond to supply chain risk issues such as forced or child labor as part of our procurement process and we will assess the need for additional or refresher training as appropriate.
  5. Our Company Code of Conduct includes language relating to slavery and human trafficking and we require each employee to acknowledge and adhere to the Code of Conduct. failure to comply with the policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
The Company believes that the activities listed above will promote the goals of the Act and help prevent slavery and human trafficking in our supply chain.

where can I see a full list of open careers and jobs at method?
method is growing fast and we’re always looking for passionate, unique folks to join our team! click here to see a list of all current openings.
is method environmentally friendly/green?
definitely. we have a whole group of formulators, engineers and scientists that keep method products their greenest. we call them our “greenskeepers.” they:
  • assess all of the ingredients in our formulations to guarantee that they are good for the environment, completely healthy for people and pets and are sourced responsibly.
  • ensure method’s final products are biodegradable, non-toxic and safe for river and marine life.
  • conduct external testing based on international standards for biodegradability and non-toxicity of our products.
  • constantly seek ways to make products with fewer compromises in environmental performance or efficacy.

if they can’t find a way to make a product work well and meet our strict safety, health + sustainability standards, we won’t make it. period.

is method non-toxic?
method cleaning products are non-toxic under normal usage conditions and are safe for people, pets and the planet. all ingredients in our cleaning products are carefully screened before consideration as a formulation ingredient to make sure they contribute to an effective cleaning process when used as directed.
where is method made?
the vast majority of method’s product line is made here in the US. in some cases, we have not been able to find US makers of some innovative technologies and produce goods abroad in Germany, China, Canada and the UK. you can see where your method product was made by checking out the package. if it says Made in the USA, it was.
does method test on animals?
method is 100% cruelty-free—that’s why all of our products are Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International-certified. that means we’re regularly audited to ensure both method and our suppliers comply with the comprehensive criteria of the Standard of Compassion for Animals.

we’ve never tested ingredients or finished products on animals, nor have we ever ordered third parties to conduct animal testing on our behalf. for research and development, we use alternative testing methods—like theoretical evaluation models—to determine product safety without harming creatures, big or small. PETA even named our cofounders people of the year in 2006 for their leadership in cruelty-free business practices + gave method a proggy award that same year.

I am interested in doing a story on method. Who should I contact?
we’re flattered! please contact Katie Molinari, katie@methodhome.com for all press and media inquiries. she rocks.
will method provide a product donation for an upcoming event?

we don’t ship products for donation, but we appreciate you thinking of us. we focus our giving back efforts on our active volunteer programs in our local communities, so don’t do corporate sponsorships.

you can email us at info@methodhome.com if you’d like to let us know about volunteer opportunities or other ways to get involved with your event or organization.
who can I contact about your website?
got input? we’d love to hear it. found an error? problem? suggestion? that's great too. please send any issues with our site to info@methodhome.com and it will be forwarded to the appropriate contact.
I thought Method didn’t believe that you had to ‘kill’ to be clean. Why the change with the antibacterial products?
in the past, we were unwilling to develop or promote antibacterial cleaners because we had not yet found a technology that met our principles and strict ingredient standards. we are excited to offer a line of antibacterial cleaners that kill 99.9% of household germs utilizing a citric acid based technology.
