What are enzymes and why are they used in cleaning products?

Last Updated: Feb 17, 2016 10:45AM PST
Enzymes are large biological molecules that help our products clean more effectively. For example, they break down certain stains from fabrics and dishes. The benefit of using them is two-fold: you get a cleaner wash while reducing the burden on the environment because you only need a tiny amount, and they reduce the need for surfactants. If 1% to 2% of the product is made up of enzymes, the amount of surfactants required is reduced by ten times. That’s why our laundry powder and dishwasher tablets contain enzymes. We typically use naturally occurring enzymes like protease and amylase that work both on protein and starch stains.
